CUSTOMS CLEARANCE · CAPE TOWN

Customs Clearance — Cape Town

Quick answer
Every commercial import into South Africa needs a customs declaration to SARS before goods are released. Standard clearance runs R450–R1,200 per shipment; complex or restricted goods R1,500–R3,500. Individuals importing under the R150,000 cumulative annual threshold don’t need an Importer’s Code — Customs Code 70707070 covers it. JLog files directly through our own SARS eFiling Customs profile rather than subcontracting to a broker, so there’s no middleman markup and no paperwork lost between two companies.

JLog provides full customs clearance for imports and exports through Cape Town and Johannesburg ports. Direct SARS eFiling Customs access, in-house HS code classification. We handle bills of entry, duty calculation, VAT collection, release coordination, and SARS query response. Bundled into shipping quotes or available standalone.

Most freight forwarders subcontract their customs work to a broker and mark up the fee. JLog coordinates both functions under one roof: direct freight booking through our carrier accounts (FedEx, DHL, Bob Go, sea and air freight partners) and direct SARS customs filing through our own eFiling Customs profile. No middleman. No lost paperwork between two companies. Contact 021 300 6099 or [email protected].

Imports — How We Clear Your Shipment

Every commercial import into South Africa requires a customs declaration to SARS before goods can be released. The clearance lifecycle has four phases, and JLog handles each one as a continuous process rather than a series of handovers.

Pre-arrival. Before your shipment lands at a South African port or airport, we classify the goods under the correct HS tariff code, calculate the customs value (typically CIF — cost, insurance, freight), and prepare the bill of entry. Getting this right ahead of arrival is the single biggest factor in fast clearance. Documents we need from you: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading or airway bill, and origin certificate if you are claiming a trade-agreement rate (EU, UK, SADC, etc.).

Arrival. When the shipment arrives, we submit the bill of entry through SARS eFiling Customs, pay the assessed duty and 15% VAT on your behalf (recovered from you on settlement), and respond to any SARS queries or random examination requests. Standard clearance typically completes in 1–3 working days.

Release. Once SARS authorises release, we coordinate with the terminal operator (Cape Town Port, OR Tambo cargo terminal, etc.) or the courier and arrange dispatch to your delivery address. For JLog-booked freight, this is seamless — for client-arranged freight (standalone clearance), we hand the release authority over to your nominated freight handler.

Post-clearance. SARS conducts post-clearance audits at random and on suspicion of misdeclaration. JLog retains all clearance documentation for the statutory five-year period and responds to audit queries on your behalf at no additional charge for shipments we cleared.

Exports — DA 550 and Beyond

South African exports require a customs declaration on form DA 550 (Bill of Entry — Export). For goods destined to trade-agreement partners, additional documentation unlocks preferential duty rates at the destination.

HS Code Classification — Where Most Mistakes Happen

HS code classification is the single most consequential decision in any import or export. The Harmonised System is a six-digit international product classification — extended to eight digits in South Africa — that determines the duty rate, VAT treatment, and any restrictions (anti-dumping, quota, import permit) that apply to your goods.

Wrong code equals wrong duty rate, which equals overpayment if you pick a code with a higher rate, or audit risk and back-duty assessments if you pick one with a lower rate. SARS post-clearance audits routinely reclassify shipments and issue assessments for under-declared duty going back three to five years. The cost of getting classification wrong is, in our experience, much higher than the cost of getting it right.

JLog’s in-house classification draws on SARS’ published tariff book, SACU customs rulings, World Customs Organisation explanatory notes, and 15+ years of South African import and export experience. For ambiguous cases we apply for a SARS Tariff Determination — a binding ruling that protects you against later reclassification. Browse our import duty calculator for typical rates, or contact us for a classification opinion on your specific goods.

SARS-Side Capability

What distinguishes a working customs broker from a paperwork-pusher is direct SARS access. JLog operates the following SARS-side capabilities:

What We Clear Through

JLog is Cape Town–based but operates national customs clearance at every major South African port:

National reach despite a Cape Town base means you do not need a separate broker for each port — JLog co-ordinates clearance wherever your goods land or depart.

Common Scenarios

The work looks different across our client base. A few illustrative cases:

Pricing

JLog’s customs clearance is priced per shipment, not as a percentage of value. Indicative ranges:

Most customs work is bundled into broader shipping quotes. Standalone clearance is available for clients who have arranged their own freight and need only the SARS-side service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you clear customs if I’m using a different shipping company?

Yes. JLog offers standalone customs clearance for clients who have arranged their own freight. We file the bill of entry, handle duty and VAT, and coordinate release with the freight handler. Standalone clearance pricing is the same as our bundled rate.

How long does customs clearance typically take?

Standard clearance runs 1–3 working days from arrival, assuming all documentation is in order. Queries from SARS or randomly assigned examinations can extend this.

Do you handle imports for non-VAT-registered individuals?

Yes, within the R150,000 cumulative annual threshold using Customs Code 70707070 (Casual Importer Code). Above that threshold, an Importer’s Code (SARS registration) is required. JLog supports the registration application as a turnkey service.

What’s the difference between a customs broker and a freight forwarder?

A freight forwarder books the shipping. A customs broker handles the SARS-side declaration, payment and release — a function JLog manages end to end — and release. Most freight forwarders subcontract customs to a broker, adding a margin. JLog coordinates both functions under one roof — direct freight booking plus customs lodged through our retained broker — without loose hand-offs.

Do you handle queries or audits from SARS?

Yes. SARS query response and audit support is included for any shipment we cleared. We respond to documentation requests, examination reports, and post-clearance audits on your behalf. Compliance history matters — clients with clean records get fewer queries over time.
