Our Five-Step Sculpture Transport Process

1. Condition Report on Collection

Before we touch your sculpture, we photograph it from all angles in natural light. We document the current condition — existing chips, cracks, patina changes, surface wear, and any fragile areas. This protects you: if the sculpture arrives in perfect condition, we have proof. If there is damage in transit, we have a clear record of what was pre-existing.

2. Custom Crating Built Around Geometry

We do not use standard boxes. Each crate is built around your sculpture’s specific shape. A bronze abstract form, a stone head, a ceramic vessel, or a resin installation — each one gets internal foam cut to shape, padded wooden battens at stress points, and shock-absorbent packaging. Large works are braced diagonally to prevent shift during acceleration, braking, and turns.

3. Material-Specific Handling

Bronze sculptures: Heavy, often with thin or cantilevered appendages. We assess the centre of gravity and support the work at its strongest points, never at extended arms or legs. Vibration during transit is the enemy — we isolate the crate from engine noise and road shock.

Stone and marble: Extremely heavy; a one-metre stone sculpture can weigh 500+ kg. We use reinforced crates, multiple handles, and plan every access route in advance. We never allow the stone to shift inside the crate.

Ceramic and porcelain: The glaze can chip from vibration alone. Ceramic works are nested in custom foam and travel upright or in the orientation that distributes load evenly.

Resin and fibreglass: These scratch easily and are sensitive to UV damage during transport. We wrap them in protective UV-blocking material and keep transit times tight.

Large-scale installation work: A 5-metre steel and stone sculpture for a corporate lobby requires advance site assessment. We work with architects and contractors to plan crane lifts, scissor lift access, and final placement sequencing.

4. Gallery Delivery and White-Glove Placement

JLog delivers sculptures directly to the gallery floor or private collection space. We do not leave the work in the foyer or outside the door. Our crew uncrates the sculpture on-site, inspects it for any damage sustained in transit, and places it in the exact position the artist or curator specifies. We work alongside the artist, gallery director, or interior designer to ensure it is level, secure, and visually correct.

5. Export and International Loan Logistics

South African artists frequently ship sculptures to international galleries, museums, and collectors. JLog handles the full export chain: customs clearance (original artworks are duty-free under HS code 9701), shipping documentation, crating to museum specification, and coordination with international freight partners. We manage ATA carnets for temporary loan exhibitions — the sculpture leaves South Africa with paperwork proving it will return, avoiding import duties in the destination country and speeding clearance on return.

• Site survey: We assess doorways, lifts, staircases, and the final placement area. We check weight limits, floor capacity, and access for equipment.
• Equipment coordination: Depending on the sculpture’s size and weight, we hire cranes, scissor lifts, or removable hoisting beams. We coordinate with the site’s facilities team and building management.
• Installation sequencing: Large works are often delivered in sections (base, body, appendages) and assembled on-site. We manage the order, levelling, and securing.
