If you sell on Takealot and handle your own fulfilment, you know the pain: packing orders in your garage, racing to meet dispatch SLAs, and watching courier costs eat into your margins. A third-party logistics provider (3PL) can take over the warehouse work so you focus on sourcing products and growing your store.
This guide explains how 3PL fulfilment works for Takealot sellers, when it makes sense to outsource, and what to look for in a South African fulfilment partner.

Shopify, WooCommerce, Takealot — we plug into your store and dispatch from Cape Town.
Takealot offers two models for sellers:
Fulfilment by Takealot (FBT): You send stock to Takealot’s warehouses. They handle storage, picking, packing, and delivery. You pay storage and handling fees. The upside: fast delivery badges and Takealot handles customer shipping. The downside: you lose control of packing quality, branding, and returns inspection.
Merchant fulfilment: You keep stock in your own space and ship orders yourself when Takealot notifies you. You control the packing process but must meet strict dispatch SLAs — typically 1-2 business days. Miss the window and Takealot penalises your seller rating.
A 3PL is the third option: you outsource merchant fulfilment to a professional warehouse that meets Takealot’s SLAs on your behalf.
Takealot penalises late shipments. If you are packing from home or a small office, sick days, holidays, and order spikes mean missed deadlines. A 3PL dispatches every business day without interruption.
Your garage, spare room, or small unit is full. A 3PL warehouse gives you flexible pallet or shelf storage that scales with your inventory — no lease commitments or security worries.
If you sell on Takealot AND your own Shopify or WooCommerce store, managing split inventory is risky. A 3PL centralises stock: one warehouse, one stock pool, orders from all channels fulfilled from the same shelves.
Some products need specialist handling that FBT warehouses are not set up for: fragile items, oversized goods, products that need quality inspection before dispatch, or items where branded packaging matters. A 3PL gives you custom packing without the FBT limitations.
FBT ships in plain Takealot packaging. A 3PL lets you include branded inserts, thank-you cards, custom packaging, and promotional material with every order.
The process is straightforward:
Not every 3PL is set up for marketplace fulfilment. Here is what matters:
| Factor | FBT | 3PL |
|---|---|---|
| Packing control | None — Takealot packs | Full — your specs |
| Branding | Takealot box | Your branded packaging |
| Delivery speed badges | Yes (built-in) | Depends on courier |
| Multi-channel | Takealot only | All platforms |
| Returns inspection | Basic | Detailed to your criteria |
| Fragile/specialist items | Standard handling only | Custom handling available |
| Cost transparency | Storage + handling fees | Storage + pick/pack + shipping |
| Scalability | Unlimited (Takealot warehouse) | Scales with your 3PL partner |
Choose FBT if: You sell high-volume, standard-size, non-fragile products exclusively on Takealot and delivery speed badges matter more than branding.
Choose a 3PL if: You sell on multiple channels, need custom packaging, sell fragile or specialist items, or want to control your brand experience.
Typical 3PL pricing in Cape Town:
For a seller doing 200 orders per month with an average of 1.5 items per order, total 3PL costs (excluding shipping) typically run a quoted amount. Shipping varies by parcel size and destination.
JLog is a Cape Town-based 3PL that supports Takealot merchant-fulfilled sellers. We store your stock in our Woodstock warehouse, pick and pack orders same-day, and ship via The Courier Guy, Aramex, DHL, and other SA couriers at our negotiated rates.
We also handle Shopify, WooCommerce, and direct orders from the same stock pool — so if you sell on multiple channels, you never oversell and your fulfilment is centralised.
For fragile or high-value products (art, ceramics, furniture), we offer custom packing, ISPM-15 crating, and white-glove handling that FBT cannot provide.

What is a 3PL warehouse in South Africa?
A third-party logistics (3PL) warehouse stores your stock and picks, packs and dispatches your orders for you — so you sell while the 3PL runs receiving, storage, fulfilment and returns.
Can a 3PL handle Takealot fulfilment?
Yes. A 3PL can hold your inventory, prepare Takealot-compliant inbound shipments, and fulfil your own website orders from the same stock. JLog runs this from its Woodstock, Cape Town warehouse.
Should I use Takealot FBT or a 3PL?
FBT stores stock for Takealot sales only; a 3PL fulfils every channel — Takealot, your own store and other marketplaces — from one pool of inventory, with your own branding on direct orders. Many sellers combine both.
