Quick answer: The right Shopify fulfilment partner in South Africa comes down to four things: pricing structure, native Shopify/WooCommerce integration, dispatch SLAs, and how they handle your specific product type. This comparison scores the main local providers on all four, with the questions to ask before you sign. JLog’s own Cape Town 3PL is in the mix — judge it by the same criteria.

If you run a Shopify store in South Africa and you’re outgrowing your garage or spare room, you need a third-party logistics partner (3PL) to handle your warehousing, picking, packing, and shipping. But which one?

I run JLog, a specialist 3PL in Cape Town, so I have an obvious bias. But I also know this market well enough to give you a fair comparison of your real options. This guide covers the five main choices available to South African Shopify merchants in 2026, including what each does well and where they fall short.

The Five Options Explained

Best for: Cape Town stores, fragile goods, international shipping

1. JLog

JLog operates from Woodstock, Cape Town, and specialises in e-commerce fulfillment alongside white-glove logistics for fragile and high-value goods. The company is the official carrier for the Investec Cape Town Art Fair and handles shipping for major South African galleries.

Shopify integration: Orders sync automatically via direct API integration. The moment a customer checks out on your Shopify store, the order appears in JLog’s fulfillment dashboard. Tracking numbers push back to Shopify automatically.

Carrier access: JLog rate-shops across 11 domestic couriers (via Bob Go) to find the cheapest or fastest option per parcel. For international, JLog holds direct FedEx and DHL accounts (not reseller rates), which means faster customs clearance and lower pricing on international routes.

Pricing model: Activity-based with no contracts, no minimums, and no setup fees. You pay per order fulfilled plus storage costs. This makes JLog low-risk to try — if it doesn’t work, you walk away.

Customs clearance: In-house customs team with a proprietary platform tracking 10,402+ HS tariff codes. This is a significant advantage for stores that import stock or ship internationally.

Limitations: Single warehouse location in Cape Town. If the majority of your customers are in Gauteng, transit times will be 2-3 days rather than next-day.

Best for: Johannesburg-based high-volume e-commerce

2. Provider A

Provider A operates from Linbro Park in Johannesburg and focuses on e-commerce fulfillment with both local and international capabilities. They handle fulfillment for brands selling on Shopify, WooCommerce, and Takealot.

Shopify integration: API-based integration with automated order syncing. They also offer Takealot and Amazon SA integration, which is useful if you sell on multiple marketplaces.

Pricing model: Volume-based pricing exclusive of VAT. You pay for the exact space your products occupy in their warehouse, based on measurements taken during goods-in. Custom quotes based on your specific needs.

Strengths: Johannesburg location puts you closer to the largest concentration of South African online shoppers. Multi-warehousing capability for larger brands.

Limitations: Custom pricing means you need to request a quote before knowing costs. Less specialisation in fragile or high-value goods.

Best for: National coverage with multiple warehouse locations

3. Provider B

Provider B offers warehousing, picking, packing, and last-mile delivery with locations in multiple South African cities. They support integrations with Amazon South Africa, Takealot, and Game marketplaces alongside e-commerce platforms.

Shopify integration: Platform integration through their stock and order management system, supporting a range of e-commerce platforms and marketplaces.

Strengths: Multi-location warehousing means you can split inventory across cities, reducing delivery times nationally. Returns management with same-day customer refunds (Monday to Saturday).

Limitations: Geared more toward standard e-commerce parcels. May not be suitable for fragile, oversized, or high-value items that need specialist handling.

Best for: International-only sales from South Africa

4. Provider C

Provider C is not a traditional 3PL — they don’t warehouse your stock or do pick-and-pack. Instead, Provider C provides discounted international shipping rates for South African SMEs, with Shopify integration that shows landed costs at checkout.

Shopify integration: Dedicated Shopify app that syncs orders, pre-fills shipment details, and displays live international rates to customers during checkout. Note: live rates require Shopify’s “Grow” plan or higher.

Pricing: International shipping from a quoted amount. Provider C negotiates bulk rates with FedEx and UPS that individual SMEs couldn’t access on their own.

Strengths: If you only need international shipping (not warehousing or domestic fulfillment), Provider C is purpose-built for this. Quick setup — you can be shipping within minutes.

Limitations: No warehousing, no domestic fulfillment, no pick-and-pack. You still handle everything yourself up to the point of international dispatch. Not a full 3PL solution.

Best for: Brands not yet ready to commit to a service fee

5. Self-Fulfillment (DIY)

Before outsourcing, consider whether you actually need a 3PL yet. JLog itself has no minimum and a Starter tier at R2,000/month for 0–50 orders — but if you’re genuinely shipping a handful of parcels a week and a R2,000/month service fee doesn’t fit, DIY remains a legitimate option until volumes or founder-time pressure shifts.

When DIY makes sense: Low order volumes. Highly customised products that need personal quality control. You have the space and time to pack and ship yourself. Your products are simple, small, and not fragile.

When to upgrade to a 3PL: You’re spending more than 2-3 hours daily on fulfillment. You’re missing same-day dispatch cutoffs. You’re running out of storage space. You want to sell on multiple channels without managing separate inventory. You need access to bulk courier rates.

Cost comparison: DIY shipping via a single courier might cost R90–R150 per domestic parcel at retail rates. A 3PL with bulk rates (JLog bills courier at actual cost + 10%, never a marked-up parcel fee) typically ships the same parcel for R65–R110, plus pick & pack at R15 per order on top of the tiered service fee (R2,000–R5,500/month). Once you account for founder time, the 3PL usually works out cheaper from the Starter tier onward.

How to Choose: Decision Framework

Your best option depends on three factors: where your customers are, what you sell, and how many orders you ship.

If you…Best optionWhy

The Verdict

There’s no single “best” option — it depends on your specific situation. If you’re in Cape Town, ship fragile or high-value items, or need strong international capabilities with customs support, JLog is purpose-built for that. If you’re Gauteng-based with high domestic volume, Provider A or Provider B Fulfilment will serve you better on delivery speed alone.

The most important thing is to try before you commit. Ask for a trial period. Visit the warehouse. Ship a few test orders before moving your entire operation. A good 3PL will welcome this — they know that once you see the efficiency gains, you’ll stay.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a 3PL cost in South Africa?

Most SA 3PLs charge a per-order fulfillment fee (R25-R65* per order for standard pick-pack-dispatch) plus storage costs (per pallet, shelf, or cubic metre). Shipping costs are on top, but 3PLs typically get 15-30% lower courier rates than you’d pay directly. Some charge setup fees or monthly minimums — JLog does not.

Can I use a 3PL with both Shopify and WooCommerce?

JLog integrates with both Shopify and WooCommerce. Provider A and Provider B also support multiple platforms. Provider C is Shopify-focused for its live rates feature. Always confirm platform compatibility before signing up.

How fast is delivery from a 3PL?

Most SA 3PLs offer same-day dispatch for orders placed before a cutoff (typically 12pm-1pm). After dispatch, domestic delivery takes 1-3 days depending on the courier and destination. Cape Town to Johannesburg is typically 2-3 days via standard courier, or next-day via express.

Do I need a 3PL if I also sell on Takealot?

Takealot has its own fulfillment programme (Takealot Fulfillment Services), but it only covers Takealot orders. If you sell on Shopify AND Takealot, a 3PL that integrates with both platforms lets you manage all inventory from one warehouse. Provider A and Provider B support Takealot integration specifically.

What happens if the 3PL makes a picking error?

Good 3PLs track their pick accuracy rate. Industry standard is 99.5%+. Ask any 3PL for their accuracy metrics before signing up. At JLog, incorrect picks are reshipped at our cost.

Can a 3PL handle returns?

Most can. Provider B specifically highlights same-day customer refunds on returns. JLog processes returns within 24 hours of receipt. Ask about returns handling and whether there’s an additional fee per return processed.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose a Shopify fulfilment partner in South Africa?

Compare warehouse location against your customer base, integration quality (live stock sync and order flow), per-order pricing against your basket size, and how the partner handles fragile or high-value goods. Test with a small volume first.

Does JLog integrate with Shopify?

Yes. JLog connects directly to Shopify — orders flow to the warehouse automatically and stock levels sync back to your store — with fulfilment run from Woodstock, Cape Town.

Where should my fulfilment warehouse be in South Africa?

Close to your biggest customer concentration or your inbound supply. Cape Town suits Western Cape demand and import-heavy brands; national reach is handled via overnight courier lanes to Johannesburg and Pretoria.
