What 3PL costs in South Africa — the short answer

Storage starts at R250 per unit per month (dropping to R220 at 21–60 units and R200 at 61+). Pick-and-pack is R15 per order for the first item, plus R5 per additional item. A monthly service fee runs from R2,000 (0–50 orders) up to R5,500 (201–500 orders). Courier is billed at your actual cost + 10%. Every rate on this page is VAT-inclusive — with no setup fees, no minimums, and month-to-month billing.

The JLog difference

No setup fees. No minimums. Month-to-month.

  • No setup fees — onboarding costs you nothing.
  • No minimums — you pay for what you use, from your very first order.
  • Month-to-month — 30 days’ written notice to leave. No lock-in contract.
  • 60 days’ notice on any price change — never a surprise at month-end.

Across the 3PL market, industry benchmarks put monthly minimums at around US$517 and one-off setup fees at US$250–US$1,500 as standard. We charge neither. That is the single biggest difference between our pricing and most of the market.

Storage pricing — the full tier table

Storage is priced per unit per month — and the same rate applies whether you store by pallet, by square metre, or on a shelf. Every figure below is VAT-inclusive.

3PL pricing FAQ

What does 3PL cost in South Africa?

At JLog, storage starts at R250 per unit per month, pick-and-pack is R15 per order (first item) + R5 per additional item, and a monthly service fee runs from R2,000 (0–50 orders) to R5,500 (201–500), with courier billed at your actual cost + 10%. A small brand storing 8 units and shipping 150 orders a month pays a predictable R9,500 in JLog fees. All rates VAT-inclusive, no setup fees, no minimums.

What does pallet storage cost in Cape Town?

Storage at JLog’s Woodstock facility is R250 per unit per month for 0–20 units, dropping to R220 for 21–60 and R200 for 61 or more. Shelf storage is R300 per shelf per month. The same rate applies whether you store by pallet, square metre or shelf. All VAT-inclusive.

Are there setup fees to start with JLog?

No. There are no setup or onboarding fees. Industry benchmarks put setup fees at US$250–US$1,500 as standard across the market — we charge nothing to get started.

Is there a minimum volume or minimum spend?

No minimums. You pay for what you use, from your first order. Typical market monthly minimums sit around US$517; we don’t charge one, and billing is month-to-month with 30 days’ notice to exit.

How does pick-and-pack pricing work?

Pick-and-pack is R15 per order for the first item, plus R5 for each additional item in that order — never a vague range. A two-item order is R20; a five-item order is R35. VAT-inclusive.

When does my storage rate drop?

Automatically, as your stored volume grows — no renegotiation and no new contract. Past 20 units every unit bills at R220; past 60 units it’s R200. You never have to ask for the lower rate.

Why 3PL Pricing in South Africa Is So Opaque — And How JLog Changes That

Most 3PL providers quote you a rate card, then surprise you with inbound receiving fees, returns processing charges, custom labelling costs, and account management minimums. You never know what you’ll actually pay until the invoice arrives at month-end.

This guide cuts through the noise. We’ve broken down the four core cost components, shown you what’s hidden in most quotes, and walked you through how a monthly 3PL bill is built so you can understand your own total cost.

At JLog, we believe transparent pricing builds trust. We handle customs clearance as part of the service and operate a proprietary customs platform with 11,887 HS codes. We’ve handled logistics for artwork, designer furniture, wine, and luxury goods since 2019. Our rates reflect that specialism — and our costs are all-in: no surprises.

What This Guide Covers

We’ll walk through storage pricing, pick-and-pack fees, freight pricing, specialist services (customs, white-glove handling, kitting), what affects your total cost, what most providers don’t include, how to calculate your own 3PL expense, and a quick comparison of 3PL vs. doing it yourself.

The 4 Core Components of 3PL Cost

Your total 3PL monthly bill breaks into four main cost lines:

1. Storage (Warehousing) — Charged per pallet, per shelf position, or per dedicated bay, usually monthly. This is your baseline cost whether you ship one order or one hundred.

2. Pick-and-Pack (Order Fulfilment) — Charged per order or per line item. A brand shipping 200 orders/month will pay pick-and-pack fees on all 200 orders.

3. Freight (Last-Mile Delivery) — Charged per parcel or per kilogramme. Can be the biggest variable in your monthly bill if you have high order volume or heavy items.

4. Specialist Services — Customs clearance, white-glove handling, kitting, assembly, branded packaging, returns processing. JLog includes most in base pricing; others charge à la carte.

The remainder of this guide breaks down each component and the factors that drive it.

Storage Pricing — Cape Town

Warehouse space in Cape Town is charged per pallet per month for standard pallet storage, per position per month for shelf storage (smaller items), and per bay per month for dedicated bays (reserved space for a single client), with the rate depending on size, duration, and location. Exact pricing depends on your storage footprint — request a quote.

At JLog’s Woodstock facility, we offer tiered storage pricing scaled to your volume. First-time users start at standard per-pallet or per-shelf rates. Long-term clients with 10+ pallets/month move to volume discounts — often 15–25% below list rate.

Storage Type Pricing (Monthly) Notes
Pallet storage (standard racking) On request Per pallet, includes 2 inbound/outbound moves per month
Shelf storage (per position) On request For items under 20kg; ideal for small e-commerce
Dedicated bay (reserved space) On request Exclusive use; billed monthly; usually 4+ week minimum
Climate-controlled storage (art, wine) On request Pallet storage with temperature/humidity control; premium rate
Inbound receiving (per pallet) On request First receipt; unload, check, label, slot. Often included in base rate

JLog Storage Advantage

We arrange climate-controlled storage for art, wine, and temperature-sensitive goods through specialist providers — essential in a Cape Town summer. Most competitors don’t. If you’re shipping designer furniture or ceramics, climate control reduces damage claims and improves your brand reputation.

Pick-and-Pack Pricing — Cape Town

Pick-and-pack (order fulfilment) fees vary based on order complexity. A single-item order is faster to pick, pack, and dispatch than a multi-item order. Most 3PLs charge a per-order fee plus a per-item fee.

Service Pricing Notes
Per-order picking & packing (1 item) On request Includes pick, verify, basic packing, label generation
Per additional item (2nd, 3rd, etc.) On request Multi-item orders pay base rate + fee per extra item
Packing materials (standard) Cost-price or included Bubble wrap, tissue, boxes. Often bundled into pick-pack fee
Branded packing inserts / tissue On request Custom branded materials cost extra; premium positioning
Outbound handling (per parcel to carrier) On request Handing off to courier; includes manifest, barcode scanning
Returns processing (per return) On request Receive, check condition, restock or bin. Not always included

Pick-and-Pack Example: Multi-Item Order

A customer orders 3 items from your brand. Your 3PL picks and packs it as follows:

Per-order base fee
+ additional items at the per-item rate
+ packing materials (included)
+ outbound handling
─────────
= one all-in pick-and-pack charge per order

Multiply by your monthly order count for the pick-and-pack line of your bill — request a quote for the actual rates.

JLog Includes Most Hidden Fees

JLog bundles packing materials, outbound handling, and branded tissue into a single pick-pack fee. We don’t charge separately for label printing, barcode scanning, or account management. That’s why our effective pick-pack rate is often lower than competitors’ rate card despite appearing similar.

Freight Pricing — South Africa & International

Freight is the most volatile cost in your 3PL bill. Domestic courier rates vary by destination, weight, and service level. International rates depend on zone (Africa, EU, UK, US, Asia-Pacific) and whether you ship by air or sea.

Freight Service Pricing Notes
Domestic courier (CT to JHB, 0.5–2kg) On request Economy service; 2–3 business days
Domestic courier (CT to JHB, 2–5kg) On request Weight-tiered; varies by carrier
Same-day metro (Cape Town city) On request Next-day within CT metro; premium rate
International air freight (to EU/UK/US) On request DHL, FedEx, Aramex; weight-dependent; fuel surcharge
International air freight (to Africa) On request Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia; lower than intercontinental
Sea freight (consolidation to EU/UK) On request Shared container; 4–6 weeks transit; significant savings vs. air
Courier surcharges +10–15% Fuel, peak season, remote areas add to base rate

Why Domestic Freight Matters More Than You Think

If you’re shipping 200 orders/month within South Africa at an average weight of 1.5kg (CT to JHB), your monthly freight bill alone can be roughly 60% of your total 3PL cost. For e-commerce brands, freight is usually your biggest variable expense.

This is why JLog negotiates carrier contracts on your behalf. We get volume discounts with DHL, FedEx, and Aramex that we pass back to you. First-time clients often save 15–25% on their courier rates just by using our negotiated pricing.

Specialist Services: Customs, White-Glove, Kitting

If you export artwork, designer goods, wine, or luxury items, specialist services add real value. Many 3PLs don’t offer these; those that do charge à la carte, which adds up fast.

Customs Clearance (SA Export & International Import)

JLog holds an SA import/export licence and has cleared customs for thousands of HS codes. For artwork and antiques, we know the CITES requirements; for wine, the alcohol export rules; for ceramics and furniture, the tariff classification.

Customs clearance costs vary:

Outbound (SA exports): priced per shipment depending on HS code complexity and destination country. A shipment of designer ceramics bound for the EU might require CITES pre-clearance, which adds 1–2 business days and costs extra. Artworks often require export permits (Department of Arts & Culture), which we handle.

Inbound (imports into SA): priced per shipment. Duty calculation, tariff classification, import declaration, and engagement with SARS. Wine imports carry excise duty; art and antiques may qualify for relief duty depending on provenance and use.

JLog includes customs clearance in our base 3PL rate for typical e-commerce goods. For specialised exports (art, wine, CITES items), we quote separately.

White-Glove Handling (Art & Luxury)

Art and high-value goods require more than standard pick-and-pack. White-glove includes:

Soft-touch picking (no scanning guns, human eyes only), tissue wrapping, museum-grade packing materials, photographic condition documentation, insurance-compliant stacking, and specialised dispatch.

Cost: priced per order depending on item size and fragility. For a gallery shipping 10–20 artworks/month it is a meaningful but predictable addition to the monthly bill — request a quote.

Kitting & Assembly

Some brands bundle multiple items into a gift box or create pre-assembled kits. JLog can assemble, add free gifts, wrap, and label as one order.

Cost: priced per kit depending on complexity. A brand kitting wine + branded glasses + voucher into a gift box pays more per kit than a simple two-item bundle; the kitting fee sits on top of storage and pick-pack — request a quote for your kit spec.

What Affects Your 3PL Price — The Five Key Drivers

1. Order Volume (Volume Discounts)

The more you ship, the lower your per-unit cost. A brand shipping 50 orders/month pays full pick-pack rate. A brand shipping 500 orders/month gets 10–15% discount. A brand shipping 2,000+ orders/month gets 20–30% discount.

2. Product Type (Fragility & Size Premiums)

Standard e-commerce goods (clothing, books) sit at the low end of pick-and-pack pricing. Fragile items (art, ceramics, wine) carry a handling premium. Oversized items (furniture) require custom handling or may trigger pallet-level fees instead of order-level fees.

3. Integration Complexity (API vs. CSV)

JLog offers real-time order integration via our proprietary API (350+ endpoints). If you connect via API, order data flows automatically; pick-and-pack staff see real-time inventory. If you upload CSV files twice daily, there’s manual handling, which costs more in labour and reduces accuracy.

API integration is faster, more accurate, and cheaper at scale. Standard CSV integration costs no extra; advanced integrations (e.g., real-time inventory sync to your e-commerce platform) are billed as managed services.

4. Returns Handling (Reverse Logistics)

Returns processing isn’t always included in base 3PL rates. If you have a 5–10% returns rate, expect returns processing to add a meaningful line to your monthly bill. JLog includes basic returns (receive, check, restock) in base rate; full-circle returns logistics (prepaid return labels, customer communications, refund processing) are quoted separately.

5. Destination Mix (Domestic vs. International)

If you ship only within South Africa, freight is predictable and cheaper. If you ship 30% internationally and 70% domestically, your average freight per order rises, and customs fees add up. International shipments also need commercial invoices and packing lists, which cost extra.

What’s NOT Included in Most 3PL Quotes — The Hidden Fees Trap

Before you sign a 3PL contract, ask these questions. Most competitors will say yes to all of them and then invoice you separately later.

Hidden Fees to Watch

Inbound receiving: Your suppliers ship to the 3PL. Unloading, spot-checking, barcode labelling, and slotting into racking — billed per pallet. Many quotes don’t mention this.

Returns processing: A returned item comes back to the warehouse. Check condition, decide restock or bin, process credit note, update inventory. Not always included; adds a per-return fee.

Account management / minimum order: Some 3PLs charge a monthly minimum or per-account fee just to have your business. Read the fine print.

Custom labelling: If your brand requires bespoke barcode labels, QR codes, or SKU stickers, that’s extra, billed per item.

Insurance: Warehouse and transit insurance are sometimes charged à la carte, sometimes included. Ask explicitly.

Customs permits & export documentation: Art exports, CITES pre-clearance, antique provenance documentation — these trigger per-shipment fees. Not always quoted upfront.

JLog’s Transparent Pricing Approach

We include inbound receiving, outbound handling, packing materials, basic returns processing, and account management in our base rate. We don’t charge setup fees. We bill monthly on actual usage, not on minimums. If you have a quiet month with only 50 orders, you pay for 50 orders, not a fixed minimum.

For specialist services (white-glove, customs permits, kitting), we quote upfront — no surprises.

How to Calculate Your Total 3PL Cost — Worked Example

Let’s say you’re an e-commerce brand shipping designer homewares. You have 200 orders/month, average 1.2kg per order, 60% domestic (Cape Town to Johannesburg) and 40% international (Cape Town to EU/UK/US). Your average order has 1.8 items.

STORAGE (Monthly)
Billed on your actual pallet or shelf count

PICK-AND-PACK (200 orders/month)
Base per-order fee + per-additional-item fee + outbound handling, multiplied by your monthly order count

FREIGHT (200 orders/month)
Domestic parcels at negotiated courier rates; international priced by weight and zone — usually the biggest line on the bill

CUSTOMS & SPECIALIST
Billed per international shipment (commercial invoices & HS codes)

RETURNS PROCESSING
Billed per return processed

─────────────────────────
TOTAL MONTHLY 3PL COST: built from your real volumes, not a generic benchmark

Request a quote and we’ll produce this exact breakdown, line by line, with real numbers for your brand.

This structure illustrates why freight and international shipping can dominate your 3PL spend. Storage and pick-pack are predictable; freight and customs vary month-to-month.

How to Reduce Your 3PL Cost

Consolidate shipments: If you ship 200 single orders/month, consolidate 5–10 orders per shipment on days where you have enough volume. This cuts your shipment count by 80% and reduces freight cost proportionally.

Increase average order value: A brand growing from 200 to 300 orders/month with the same storage space saves 33% per-order cost (storage spreads across more orders).

Shift to regional hubs: If you ship heavily to JHB, consider a satellite warehouse there. Shipping CT→JHB is expensive; a local warehouse in JHB can dispatch same-day or next-day at half the cost.

Negotiate carrier rates: JLog’s volume agreements with DHL, FedEx, and Aramex save clients 15–25% off list price. If you’re not using a 3PL yet, you’re paying full courier rates.

Bundle international shipments: Shipping 10 parcels weekly to the EU costs more than shipping 1 consolidated box weekly. Consolidation adds 2–3 business days but cuts freight cost by 30–40%.

Self-Fulfilment vs 3PL — Where the Hidden Costs Sit

The true cost of self-fulfilment is often underestimated because labour and time are not tracked as direct costs.

Cost Category Self-Fulfilment JLog 3PL
Warehouse space Typical Cape Town warehouse rent, plus staff time and packaging Included in storage fee — variable
Packing labour Founder or staff time (opportunity cost) Included in pick and pack fee
Courier rates Standard retail rates Negotiated volume rates (10–25% lower)
Carrier accounts 1–2 couriers, limited negotiating power 11 domestic + FedEx + DHL
Technology (WMS) Manual spreadsheets or basic tools JLog platform included
Packaging wastage Unpredictable, often over-ordered Optimised per order type
Scalability Requires physical expansion No action required

A 3PL typically makes economic sense from around 50 orders per month, assuming the founder or a staff member is currently packing orders. The break-even depends on the current time cost per order and the value of that time if redirected to growth activities.

“The brands that come to us and say ‘3PL is too expensive’ are usually comparing our per-order fee to just the box and tape. When they actually track their time, their storage rent, and the courier rates they’re on — we’re almost always cheaper. And that’s before the growth they get back when they stop packing orders.”

3PL vs. In-House Logistics — The Cost Comparison

Cost Factor 3PL (JLog) In-House Warehouse
Rent (1,000 m² for 100+ pallets) Included (variable) Significant fixed monthly rent
Staff (2–3 pickers, 1 manager) Included in pick-pack fee Salaried headcount (fixed cost)
Racking, forklifts, equipment Included Upfront capex + maintenance
Courier account setup & negotiations Included (we negotiate for you) Setup cost; full freight at list rate
WMS software & integration Included (our API) Monthly SaaS licence
Total (for 200 orders/month) Quoted on your volumes Typically well above the 3PL equivalent
Break-even volume (orders/month) N/A — we handle any volume ~300 orders/month to justify in-house

Note: This comparison assumes one warehouse location. Multi-location in-house logistics (e.g., CT and JHB) multiplies these costs by 2. For a fuller comparison, see our guide “DIY vs. 3PL: When to Bring Logistics In-House”.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does 3PL cost in South Africa?

3PL cost depends on four factors: storage, pick-and-pack, freight, and specialist services. What you actually pay is driven by your monthly order volume, storage footprint, and order profile — higher volumes earn meaningful per-order discounts. Rather than quoting generic figures, we price against your real numbers: request a quote and we’ll build you a line-by-line monthly estimate.

What is a typical pick-and-pack fee?

Pick-and-pack is billed as a base fee per order plus a smaller fee per additional item. At JLog, we bundle outbound handling and basic packing materials into that single per-order fee, so there are no separate handling charges. Most competitors charge these separately, which makes their rates appear cheaper until you see the invoice. Request a quote for current pricing on your order profile.

Are there minimum volume requirements for 3PL?

No. JLog doesn’t enforce minimums. We work with brands shipping 5 orders/month and brands shipping 5,000 orders/month. You pay only for what you use. Some competitors charge monthly minimums; we don’t. That said, at very small volumes (under 20 orders/month), per-order costs are higher because fixed warehouse overhead doesn’t spread across many orders.

How do 3PL setup fees work?

JLog doesn’t charge setup fees. We charge inbound receiving when your first pallet arrives (to cover unload, label, and slotting), then monthly fees for storage, pick-pack, and freight. Other 3PLs may charge a significant upfront onboarding fee. Always ask upfront whether there’s a setup fee; it’s a major cost that many brands overlook.

What is the difference between 3PL and courier pricing?

Courier pricing is the cost to ship a single parcel from one address to another. 3PL pricing includes courier services plus warehousing, picking, packing, customs, and account management. A brand using only a courier (no warehouse) pays full list rate on every parcel. A brand using 3PL gets negotiated courier rates (usually 15–25% cheaper) because the 3PL consolidates volume across all clients and passes the discount back.

How do I get a 3PL quote?

Contact JLog with: (1) your expected monthly order volume, (2) average order weight and dimensions, (3) product type (fragile, standard, oversized), (4) where you ship (within SA, regional Africa, international), (5) any special handling (white-glove, customs, kitting). We’ll provide a customised quote within 24 hours. No upfront cost; no obligation. Get in touch here.
