What Is Parcel Forwarding?

Parcel forwarding is a logistics service that receives goods on your behalf at a local address, inspects and photographs them, consolidates multiple shipments if needed, handles all customs paperwork, and forwards the goods to your final destination worldwide.

Consolidation is especially powerful for sea freight. A consolidated parcel via sea freight to the EU is significantly cheaper per kg than air freight. The trade-off: sea freight takes 4–6 weeks instead of 4–10 business days. For brands that can plan ahead, consolidation is a no-brainer.

Customs & Duties: Clear Before Your Customer’s Door

One of parcel forwarding’s biggest advantages is clearing customs in South Africa before the goods leave. We handle South African export clearance and the export documents. Destination duties and import clearance are the receiver’s responsibility; we prepare the paperwork so the receiver knows what to expect.

How JLog Handles Customs

Our customs team prepares correct commercial invoices and HS code declarations for every parcel. We work with the destination country’s customs regulations:

EU Imports: We prepare the commercial invoice in EUR, declare the HS code correctly, and mark items as “new” or “used” as appropriate. The parcel arrives at EU customs already classified — usually no delays.

UK Imports: Post-Brexit, all imports from SA require customs pre-notification. We prepare the commercial invoice and export documents; UK import clearance, duty and VAT are the receiver’s responsibility.

US Imports: We provide a detailed invoice with tariff numbers. US customs uses this to assess landed duty cost. We don’t pay US duties on your behalf (you or your importer pays at entry); we just ensure correct documentation.

Art & Antiques (CITES/Cultural Goods): If you’re forwarding art, sculpture, or items over 100 years old, we check whether they need a SAHRA export permit (art and heritage objects) or a CITES permit (protected species). The owner applies for any permit, and we ship once it is in place. This is essential to avoid shipment seizure.

What’s Duty-Free & What’s Not

Most countries allow items under a certain declared value (often USD 100–200) to enter duty-free as “gifts” or “samples.” Above that, import duties apply. JLog declares the true value so your importer can assess their duty cost upfront — no surprises.

For EU imports of goods valued under EUR 150, VAT is often deferred. For UK imports, VAT is now charged at entry. We prepare invoices to match each destination’s rules.

What We Can’t Forward, and What We Need First

Every parcel travels on a courier or an airline, and their rules, plus the rules of the destination country, apply on top of customs. A few goods we can never forward. Many others we can forward, as long as the right paperwork is in place before we collect. If you are unsure about an item, ask us first.

Never forwarded, whatever the paperwork

Illegal drugs and controlled substances. Firearms, ammunition, explosives and fireworks. Counterfeit or brand-infringing goods. Asbestos. Cash, bank notes and similar. Live animals and human remains.

Forwarded once a permit or licence is in place

You (the owner, importer or exporter) apply for the permit. We plan the shipment around it and ship once it is in hand. If the permit is refused, the shipment cannot go.

Cultural goods and antiques: items over 100 years old, sculptures and artefacts that count as cultural property under the National Heritage Resources Act need a SAHRA export permit.

CITES items (endangered species): coral, tortoiseshell, certain furs and certain woods need a CITES permit from DFFE.

Wine and alcohol: exportable from South Africa with the correct licensing. We work with wine exporters regularly. Destination rules vary (some US states prohibit wine imports) and we can’t override destination law.

Medicines, supplements and cosmetics: some countries require product registration or certification. We can forward if you provide the documents.

Food, plants, seeds and animal products: these usually need health or plant permits, in South Africa and at the destination.

Electronics and electrical goods: some destinations require CE marking or local certification. Not prohibited, but your importer may face duties or registration requirements.

Dangerous goods: forwarded with a Safety Data Sheet (SDS / MSDS)

A Safety Data Sheet (SDS, still called an MSDS by many people) is the manufacturer’s document that says what a product contains and how to handle it safely. We need a current copy before we collect any of these goods:

Aerosols and spray cans. Perfume, cologne, nail polish and other alcohol-based liquids. Paint, varnish, solvents, glue and adhesives. Cleaning products, pool chemicals, hair dye and hand sanitiser. Essential and fragrance oils. Magnets, lighters and dry ice.

Lithium batteries and products that contain them (power banks, e-bikes, vapes, some electronics) also need a UN 38.3 battery test summary.

The SDS must be current and show the product’s flash point where it applies. Goods must be packed and labelled as dangerous goods where the rules require it. Many of these cannot travel as a normal courier or air parcel. We check which route the carrier allows (sometimes sea freight), and we tell you the route and cost before we collect. If no route works, we say so up front.
