Export from South Africa
JLog handles export freight from South Africa to the world — air, sea and courier — end to end: collection, packing and crating, export customs clearance, international carriage, and delivery at destination. We’re Cape Town based, and we hold our own SARS exporter code and lodge export declarations directly via SARS’s EDI system.

What Export Costs
Your export cost is built from the freight, any crating, and the export customs work — quoted together, per consignment. There is no flat rate, because no two consignments are the same.
- Mode. Air is fastest; sea is economical for volume; courier suits small parcels.
- Size and weight. Freight is charged on the greater of actual and volumetric weight.
- Crating. Museum-grade crates for fragile or high-value goods add cost but protect the piece.
- Destination and insured value. Distance, carrier and the cover you need all feed the quote.

White-Glove Export
Our specialist edge is fragile, high-value and irregular goods — art, sculpture, designer furniture, lighting, ceramics, antiques and carpets. Each piece is packed to museum standard in plywood or ISPM-15 timber crates from our Woodstock workshop, handled with climate awareness, with condition reports on request. For qualifying artworks, a SAHRA export permit may be required — the owner applies directly through SAHRIS (our permit guide); we flag this at enquiry and plan logistics around the permit timeline. For temporary exports we can assist with a SACCI-issued ATA Carnet. JLog is the official carrier for the Investec Cape Town Art Fair.
- Ship art from South Africa — gallery, collector and art-fair shipments.
- Furniture export — designer, bespoke and antique pieces.
- Crating & packing — museum-grade plywood crates (exempt from ISPM-15).
The Export Process
- Collection — we collect with our own vehicles in Cape Town and arrange collection across South Africa through partners.
- Pack and crate — museum-grade crating where needed, in ISPM-15 timber.
- Export declaration — we prepare and lodge the SAD 500 via SARS’s EDI system.
- Carriage — booked on air, sea or courier to your destination.
- Destination clearance — goods are cleared into the receiving country and any duty or VAT settled.
- Delivery — delivered to your buyer’s door.
Air transit is typically 3–7 days. Sea transit varies by route and is quoted per consignment; we give you the realistic window with your quote. SARS release on a clean export entry is usually same-day.
Where We Export
What We Need From You
To quote and lodge your export we need a commercial invoice (goods, value, Incoterms, HS code), a packing list (per-piece dimensions and weight), and your exporter registration. For commercial exports you need your own SARS exporter code — it is free to register, and JLog can advise on registering one; see our exporter-code guide. For preferential duty at destination, add an origin certificate (EUR.1 for the EU, SADC for Africa).
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to export from South Africa?
There is no flat rate — every export is quoted per consignment, driven by the mode (air, sea or courier), the size and weight, any crating, the destination and the insured value. You get one written quote covering crate, freight and customs before work starts.
Do I need an exporter code?
For commercial exports you need a SARS exporter code — it is free to register. JLog can handle the exporter-code side for one-off shipments, or advise on registering your own if you export regularly. See our exporter-code guide.
Can you ship artwork and furniture overseas?
Yes — it is our specialist edge. Art, sculpture, designer furniture and antiques are packed to museum standard in plywood or ISPM-15 timber crates, with condition reports on request, and shipped by air or sea. For qualifying artworks a SAHRA permit may be required — the owner applies directly through SAHRIS; we advise on timing and plan freight around the assessment. We can assist with carnet shipments; the carnet is issued by SACCI.
How long does export take, air versus sea?
Air freight typically moves in 3–7 days depending on destination. Sea transit varies by route and is quoted per consignment; we give you the realistic window with your quote. SARS release on a clean export entry is usually same-day.
Do you handle the export customs clearance?
Yes. JLog handles your South African export customs clearance — we prepare and lodge the SAD 500 via SARS’s EDI system as part of the job.
