How to Get Your South African Exporter Code in 2026

An exporter code is your official registration with SARS that allows you to legally export goods from South Africa. Every company that ships internationally needs one. It’s free, quick, and mandatory.

What Is an Exporter Code?

Your exporter code is a unique identifier issued by the South African Revenue Service (SARS). It proves you’re a legitimate exporter and allows SARS customs to track and process your shipments. Without it, you cannot clear goods for export — even if you use a professional logistics partner.

The 4-Step Process to Get Your Code

  1. Prepare Your Documents — Gather your company registration certificate (CIPC), VAT certificate (if registered), proof of business address (utility bill or lease agreement), and your ID or passport.
  2. Register with SARS Online — Go to www.sars.gov.za and navigate to “Register for SARS Taxes”. Select “Exporter” as your registration type. You’ll receive a temporary reference number immediately.
  3. Submit Supporting Documents — Within 5 business days, submit copies of your documents online or at a SARS office. Cape Town’s main SARS office is at 40 Strand Street, Cape Town CBD.
  4. Receive Your Code — Once SARS verifies your documents (2–3 business days), you’ll receive your exporter code via email. You can now export legally.

South Africa has approximately 160,000 registered exporters (SARS, 2024). Approximately 70% are SMEs. The logistics sector has grown 12.4% year-on-year, driven by increased e-commerce exports.

Frequently Asked Questions: South African Exporter Code

How much does an exporter code cost?
It’s completely free. SARS issues exporter codes at no charge.

How long is my exporter code valid?
Your code is valid indefinitely, but you must keep SARS updated if your business details change.

Can I export without registering with SARS?
No. All commercial exports require SARS registration. Goods shipped without an exporter code will be stopped at customs and may be confiscated.

Can my logistics provider get my exporter code for me?
No. You must register directly with SARS. However, your logistics provider can guide you through the process — JLog’s export freight services include exporter-code support for new exporters.
